A Night at the Ballet
SBA members enjoyed an outstanding opening night of the Youth Ballet WA production of ‘La Fille Mal Gardée’ at the Regal Theatre. Following the ballet members had the opportunity to meet with visiting artists including past Youth Ballet WA members now dancing with major ballet schools in Europe and three visiting dancers from Russia.
Business after Hours at Friendlies Chemist Subiaco
The first business after Hours event for 2009 was an informative presentation by Murray Rowe and a tour of Friendlies Chemist Subiaco.
Highlights of the evening at this national award-winning chemist included the naturopathy, homoeopathy and hemaview demonstrations and a tour of the beauty treatment clinic and photo lab.
Members enjoyed networking with other members over a glass of wine and nibbles. Included in the Business after Hours will be a wine seminar by Musca Liquor Agencies, who will be providing wine to taste from Victoria, South Australia and New Zealand.


February – “New Kids on the Block” event with Stephen Tindale, CEO City of Subiaco, and Bill Marmion MLA, Member for Nedlands at Fire & Ice Bar
50 plus members and guest attended an informative event at Subiaco’s newest small bar Fire and Ice where “New Kids on the Block” Stephen Tindale, CEO City of Subiaco, and Bill Marmion MLA, Member for Nedlands gave their views in regards to their respective roles and the future of the City and the business community.
The presentations were followed by an extensive question and answer period.
The event provided an ideal opportunity to meet the two new leaders and to network with other members.
March – David Wirrpanda event at Pure Bar
David Wirrpanda captivated over 70 members and guests with his open and informative discussion on wide ranging topics including his life, football and the David Wirrpanda Foundation.
Wide ranging questions came after the presentation and many members took the opportunity for a one on one discussion with David.

SBA Celebrates the Festive Season.
Almost 70 members and guests enjoyed a memorable Christmas Dinner function at the award winning Bistro Felix on December 8th.
Fine food accompanied by the smooth sounds of Café Jazz provided an ideal event for members to catch up and also meet many of the new members who have recently joined the SBA.
The evening also saw another successful auction run by auctioneer, Peter Lawrance of Paxton Hoad. As has been the case on 3 of the last 5 SBA Christmas events the night was also Peter’s birthday and we are very grateful that he again chose to celebrate it with the SBA.
A percentage of the auction receipts was donated to The Hawkevale Trust, the SBA’s first Not for Profit Member. Prior to the auction Yvonne Parnell, the Executive Officer of the Trust, provided some background to the Trust and the very beneficial services it provides to families of people with intellectual disabilities.

Marketing Presentation with Management Consultant David Reid - Monday 13th October 2008
SBA and Pro Subi members and guests enjoyed an inspiring and informative evening with business marketing expert David Reid at Subiaco’s new ‘Fire and Ice’ restaurant located at Subiaco Station Square.
David, who is involved in the ‘Curtin Growth Program’ which provides leading advice for small to medium business enterprise, captured the audience with his informal round-table presentation providing marketing tips for business success.
A central theme throughout David’s presentation was the importance of retaining a focus on client service, retention and referrals and appreciation of your existing client base.
David also reinforced the value of employing strategic marketing tactics in a world where people are saturated with some 3,000 advertising messages daily.
Guests enjoyed the elegant and contemporary surroundings of Fire and Ice coupled with delectable food, and wine.

The Commercial Property Update Dinner – Monday November 17 2008
The SBA held its annual Commercial Property Update dinner on Monday 17 November at the popular Subiaco eatery, the Witch’s Cauldron restaurant.
The event was another sell-out attracting a diverse group of SBA members and guests including; Subiaco retailers, property developers, investors and real estate agents.
Presentations by Gavin Hegney from Hegney Property Group and Nick Takacs of Burgess Rawson addressed the City’s Main Street Policy and the status of commercial leasing in Subiaco.
Both speakers’ informed the audience of the dramatic changes in the Subiaco commercial landscape and reinforced the value and uniqueness of Subiaco’s strip shopping precinct.
Key issues that were discussed by the speakers and in the lively question sessions were:
Areas of suburban and CBD Melbourne were identified as an eclectic urban model to inspire because of its successful mixed-use development, established strip shopping precincts and integration of its laneway economy within the city centre.
The evening was a great success providing an opportunity for networking, spending time with friends and with fellow business owners.
Guests enjoyed a generous three course meal and notably the favourite choice of many was Witch’s fabulous garlic prawn dish.

AGM – 22nd September 2008
The SBA’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) was held on Monday 22nd of September 2008 at the Subiaco Hotel. The cocktail style event provided an opportunity for over 40 members and guests to network with other members as well as fulfil the formal requirements of the AGM and the election of office bearers.
Platinum and Corporate members were presented with their official SBA framed membership certificates on the night and we were delighted to announce the Subiaco Hotel as SBA’s latest Platinum member.
City of Subiaco Mayor, Heather Henderson, expressed appreciation for the work that the SBA was doing and recognised the strong relationship the SBA had developed with both the City and Pro Subi.
Guests were entertained by John Robertson who provided an eclectic comedy presentation.

Members of the SBA enjoyed the company of Adam Bury, who provided a comprehensive overview regarding Western Force's brand development and public perception. The talk touched on the teams’ recent sponsorship challenges, the new stadium and the future of Rugby Union in WA.
‘Business after Hours’ with the Hon Julie Bishop MP
The Hon. Julie Bishop MP Shadow Minister for Employment, Business, and Workplace Relations hosted SBA’s ‘Business after Hours’ event at her offices on Rokeby Rd on Monday 11th August.
Over 30 SBA members had the opportunity of having Julie update us on the current political scene at both a federal and state level and provide the opportunity for us to share our views and concerns.
Bill Marmion, the endorsed Liberal candidate for Nedlands at the up-coming State elections also attended and received valuable contributions from the local business community.
The SBA thanks Julie and Bill for their pro-active engagement of the local business community and their efforts on the night to deliver such as informative event.

Thursday May 1, 2008– The Subiaco Business Association (SBA) Re-launches its brand and website – Social Subiaco Lounge Restaurant.
The re-launching of the SBA brand and website was held recently in the Lounge Bar of Social Subiaco Lounge Restaurant on May 1 2008. Dignitaries and guests enjoyed canapés and drinks and an informal presentation regarding the development of the new SBA website and brand repositioning.
Among the attendees were the City of Subiaco Mayor Heather Henderson, CEO Chester Burton ,and several Councillors including; Murray Rowe and Lynley Hewitt.

An informative evening of networking was held and enjoyed by all at the Subiaco Post Office on Monday May 5 2008. Area Manager, David Morley discussed the growth of the postage industry and initiatives Australia Post Subiaco had implemented to deliver superior customer service to meet increasing customer demands.
The SBA extends a big thank you to David and Australia Posts’ passionate staff for their fantastic hospitality and professionalism demonstrated throughout the evening.
The event also included a delicious tasting of gorgeous boutique Western Australian wines from Pepperilly Estate winery and a discussion of the grape varietals produced at their Ferguson Valley winery.

Tuesday May 20, 2008 – Bank of Queensland luncheon – Social Subiaco Lounge Restaurant
David Liddy, Managing Director and CEO of the Bank of Queensland (BOQ), addressed members and guests of the SBA providing an enlightening presentation regarding the growth and success of the BOQ brand and highlighting the exceptional achievements of BOQ’s Subiaco branch, owned and operated by Tania Watton.
The presentation included in-depth discussions of Australia’s banking industry, the benefits of delivering superior customer service and community banking and the future of banking services and products. The presentation was both personal and engaging, with David delivering both a credible and humorous speech which captured the attention of guests and prompted further discussion in a question and answer forum.
